---

Willis began to seriously court Genevieve during her first year at Clarion Normal School. However, Genevieve's father did not approve of Willis, and planned to send her to live with a relative in Wisconsin. When Genevieve learned about his plan, she and Willis eloped. They traveled to Cumberland, Maryland, and they were married in the W. Stephen's Lutheran Church.
