She was born in Chartiers township, Washington County, PA, and remained with the family in West Virginia and Washington County. She attended school at Washington, Lone Pine and at Pleasant Hill Seminary. She prepared for the vocation of a teacher, but having met with an accident in 1868 was compelled to abandon that profession.
