He was educated in the public schools and high school of Franklin, Pennsylvania, and Riverview Military Academy at Poughkeepsie, New York, graduating from the latter in 1900. In the fall of that year he entered Princeton University, but did not quite complete the full course, as he did not return there for his senior year. After a trip through the western states he returned to Franklin and entered the Lamberton National Bank, July 1, 1903, in which he held the position of assistant cashier.
