He was born in the City of Brotherly Love, and went to Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, with his father, where he became a merchant, carrying on his business first in Huntingdon, then in Petersburg, and again in Huntingdon. He was a member of the General Assembly of Pennsylvania in 1802.
