His parents were stricken with fever and died when he and his siblings were comparatively young, and the children were taken into the family of a neighbor, William Smith, who later became his father-in-law.

He and his wife purchased the farm known as Kilbuck, which has remained as a homestead in the Elkin family to the present [1917].
