He was a Presbyterian minister.

He was pastor of the First Presbyterian church at Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, for thirty-three years, and widely known for his activity for the good of his community. During the Civil War served in the field as a member of the Christian Commission and did much to relieve the suffering of the soldiers.
