He attended the common schools, and learned telegraphy in the Western Union office at Butler, Pennsylvania, in which he became an operator. In 1890 he engaged in the oil business, and was quite a successful producer, his operations being confined to the Glade Mills field.
He and his wife were members of the Lutheran church, and he was an adherent of the Democratic party.
