He was born in Mifflin township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, and after his first marriage located in Lincoln township. He began life under peculiarly fortunate circumstances. He inherited a handsome competency, to which, by judicious investment in various directions he continually added until he was known as one of the most successful financiers of his day.
