General Notes: Husband - George W. Eckles

He enlisted in Company A, Eighty-third Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, on September 14, 1861, and participated in many of the historic engagements of the army of the Potomac, to which it was attached. Although he passed through the conflict of battle unscathed, the hardships of the march, field and campaigns in general, so told upon his physical constitution as to leave permanent effects which ultimately caused his death. After his honorable discharge from the service, however, he returned to his home in Sheakleyville, PA, and afterward for two years conducted a livery stable. Subsequently he was employed on the mail service between Sheakleyville and Hadley. His last venture was as proprietor of a hotel, which, on account of ill health, he was obliged to close a week before his death. He was a firm Republican and an member of the Grand Army post at Sheakleyville.

At her husband’s death she obtained a position as a housekeeper with William Sheakley, sending her children to the Orphans’ Home at Mercer and retaining the position named for some five years. She afterward assumed other employment and, with the additional help of her widow’s pension, was eventually enabled to purchase a home, situated at the edge of Sheakleyville. Before the Civil War, the home she bought had been quite a popular station on the Underground railway, which during that period was a busy institution of Mercer County. Mrs. Eckles was a member of the Sheakleyville Methodist church, being one of the life members of the Church Missionary Society. She was also a member of the Woman’s Foreign Society of her church.
