He was well known as a merchant on Liberty street, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In the year 1839 he established a gentleman's clothing and furnishing store, which was largely patronized by the young men of that time. He was later residing in St. Clair township.

He and his wife were the parents of five sons and five daughters, nine of whom were living in 1889.
