He was born in Ireland, and remained with his father until nineteen years of age, when he began the publication of the Sentinel at Cham­bersburg, Pennsylvania, removing subsequently to Carlisle, Pennsylvania, where he published the Volunteer. Later we find him in Harris­burg, Pennsylvania, where he was the publisher of the Commonwealth, and in 1824 he went to Pittsburgh, establishing in that city the Alle­gheny Democrat.
