He was educated in Trinity Hall, Ann Arbor High School, and the University of Michigan. After completing his college course he came to Oil City, Pennsylvania, and engaged in the lumber business, being a partner in the Greenfield Lumber Company. He was connected with this company for five years, then retired, and formed a new partnership with James B. Kelley. This firm was known as the Earp & Kelley Lumber Company. He was also connected with the firm of Thornton, Anderson & Company, lumber merchants, in West Virginia. He was a Republican in politics, and was a member of the select council of Oil City.

She graduated from Wilson College in 1912 and subsequently spent one year in a select school in Berlin.
