General Notes: Husband - Joseph Galbraith

---

He was reared on the homestead farm and received his education in the district school and at Witherspoon Institute, Butler, Pennsylvania. He was a great student, made the best use of his opportunities, excelled in mathematics and became well grounded in sacred and general literature. His reputation as a mathematician was such that students, as well as instructors, came from considerable distances to avail themselves of his assistance, which he always cheerfully extended. He was a constant and attentive reader of the bible, and became noted for his knowledge of that sacred book and his ability to quote it readily and accurately. He was an industrious and intelligent farmer, and, while making that his main pursuit, he developed superior mechanical ability, and was an expert in the use of tools.
He took a warm interest in military matters, was for years a member of the Butler militia company, and was severely wounded while out with his company, by the accidental discharge of a musket.
The family removed from Butler County to Pittsburgh in 1860. Several years later, his wife having in the meantime died, Joseph returned to Butler County, and spent most of his remaining years at West Sunbury.
