He was born and reared on his father's farm in East Pike Run Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, and after 1904 was actively engaged in the insurance business at Monessen. After the death of his father he was elected one of the directors of the Peoples Bank of California, his father having been president of same at the time of his death, and although successfully engaged in business at Monessen, still took an interest in the affairs of his native township, and devoted his leisure time to assisting his brothers and sisters in the management of the farm inherited from their father.
