General Notes: Husband - Crawford White

In New Castle, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania: He purchased all the land lying in the point between the Shenango river and Neshannock creek, amounting to about thirty acres, of his brother, David, about 1815. He also purchased a strip along the east side of the Neshannock, sufficient to cover the overflow. On the 17th of July, 1817, a tract, lying east of the original town plat, and including a strip on the east side of the Neshannock, was sold at sheriff's sale for debt. It contained twenty-six acres and twenty-nine perches, and was probably a portion of J. C. Stewart's property. Crawford White and Arthur Chenowith purchased this property in company, and, about 1818, built a brush-dam a few rods above where the canal-dam was later located. The same year Crawford White alone, or in company with Chenowith, erected mills on what was later the site of Raney's mill.
In 1820, Chenowith quit-claimed his interest in all the above described lands to White. The consideration which White and Chenowith paid for the twenty-six acres, was $650.
Crawford White, before his death, sold this property to his son, James D., who rebuilt the mills, and laid out an addition to the town, south of the original plat between the rivers, in 1837. All of James D. White's property remaining at his death, was sold to the Etna Iron Company. The canal dam, when built, flooded the old brush dam. [HLC 1877, 23]

He was born in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, and in 1804 came to New Castle, Lawrence County, and settled on lot No. 1953 of the "donation lands," on which he built a log-house. In 1806 he returned to his native county to marry, and then began to clear the land on his New Castle property. In the War of 1812 he was a member of Capt. Fisher's Company, which went to Erie. In 1818 he erected a grist-mill with three sets of stones and a saw-mill at the foot of Beaver Street, and did the principal part of the milling for the settlers for miles around. He and his wife were both members of the Presbyterian Church, and helped to build the old brick Presbyterian Church.
