After his marriage, they settled on a farm of fifty-three acres near Greenfield, Mercer County, PA, where they resided for many years. He enlisted in the Civil war on October 2, 1862, under Capt. L. C. Morrow, of Company H, One Hundredth Pennsylvania Volunteers. He was soon stricken down with typhoid fever and inflammatory rheumatism, and after six months was honorably discharged and returned to the farm. He was a Prohibitionist, and with his wife belonged to the United Presbyterian Church.
