General Notes: Husband - John Lyle Proudfit

He was born in Hanover township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, and when but eight months old was taken by his parents to York County, where he received his early education. When sixteen years of age he returned with his parents to Smith township, Washington County, and entered the arena of agricultural pursuits.
He resided at Burgettstown, where he dealt extensively in stock, giving special attention to sheep raising. When the Burgettstown National Bank was organized, he was elected president of that corporation, at first of the Savings Bank connected with it, filling that office until his death. In politics he was a Democrat, and in religion a Presbyterian, and an elder in that Church, at the time of his death a member of the U. P. Church in Burgettstown.

In the spring of 1867 he removed from his farm in Smith township to Burgettstown, where he then had his residence. He still superintended the work on his farms lying near the town. He was at one time captain of the Burgettstown militia; held the office of justice of the peace and other important local offices. He was for many years a member of the Presbyterian Church, an elder in the same, but later became a communicant of the United Presbyterian Church.
