He was educated at Jefferson college, Pennsylvania. He studied law under John B. Alexander, at Greensburg, and located in Indiana, Pennsylvania, in 1831. He was a successful lawyer, and a gentleman of pleasant social qualities and a fine literary taste. He was a member of the Democratic party, and took a decided part in politics, and to some extent was a newspaper writer. He served in the State Senate and in Congress.
