He was born in Conemaugh township, Indiana County, Pennsylvania, and was reared and educated there. He followed farming and also lumbering, in different sections of Indiana County, being a farmer in Conemaugh, Washington and Brushvalley townships prior to moving to Center township, where he bought seventy-seven acres of land, known as the C. A. Smith farm, and there he was interested in farming and stock raising.
He and his wife were members of the United Brethren Church. He gave his support to the Prohibition party.
