He was reared on the old home farm in Adams Township, Butler County, PA, and assisted in finishing its clearing and later, after his father purchased another farm, cleared it also. His education was not neglected and after he left the district schools he attended an academy conducted by Rev. Barnes. Later he bought one of his father's farms and there carried on general farming and stockraising. He made all the im­provements on the property in the way of erecting substantial buildings, and also developed oil on his land.
