General Notes: Husband - William C. Culbertson

In 1846, he engaged in lumbering on the Allegheny River and in Kentucky, subsequently continuing in Jefferson County. He had branches established at several points in the South and West. The oldest branch, in Covington, Kentucky, in which his eldest son-James A.-was interested, was known as J. A. Culbertson & Co. The Girard Lumber Company had mills at Menominee, Michigan; a lumber yard in Chicago was under the name of W. C. Culbertson & Son. He was connected with the Penn Mill at Albion, the business conducted under the firm name of Penn Lumber Co. He owned extensive timber lands in Northern Michigan and in the yellow pine timber districts of Missouri, a wheat farm in the Red River Valley of Minnesota, as well as smaller farms in Kentucky, Allegheny Springs, Warren County, Pennsylvania; Edinboro, Erie County, Pennsylvania, and the home estate near Girard. He was proprietor of the Girard Flouring Mills, and President of the Girard Wrench Factory, in which he had an interest.

He received his education in the public schools of his native town, and completed it by private study and reading. He remained with his father until he was 21 years of age, and then engaged in business for himself. He began lumbering on the Allegheny river in Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, and in Kentucky, his mill and sash, door and blind factory being located in Covington, where he resided and made his headquarters. In 1863 he removed to Girard, Pennsylvania, where he then resided. In 1866 Mr. Culbertson went to Michigan and began the careful selection and purchase of the best tracts of timber, which he continued until he had purchased over 62,000 acres in Michigan and Wisconsin. In the winter of 1870-71 he took up his business headquarters in Menominee, Michigan, where he engaged in cutting and manufacturing lumber. The Girard Lumber Company was organized in 1881, with William C. Culbertson, president; John W. Wells, vice president, and James A. Culbertson, secretary and treasurer. Charles B. Culbertson also became a member of the firm which constituted the company. The headquarters of this company was at Menominee, Michigan, where they manufactured chiefly white pine lumber, which is wholesaled along the line of the Great Lakes and adjacent waters. The yards were equipped with railroad tracks and a fine dock for the loading of boats. The business gave employment to about 250 men. Besides his interest in the Girard Lumber Company Mr. Culbertson had a large lumber plant in Murphy, North Carolina, where he owned a large amount of timber, containing a heavy growth of poplar. He also owns a large tract of timberland in Missouri. Although so extensively engaged in lumbering, Mr. Culbertson also found time to give his attention to other lines of industry. He owned and operated a farm of nearly 5,000 acres on the Red river in Minnesota, and in partnership with Mr. Charles W. Wheeler, of LeBoeuf township, Erie County, Pennsylvania, owned another large farm in the same state. He was also extensively engaged in farming in Erie County. He owned the Culbertson homestead at Edinboro, and beginning in 1871 owned Allegheny Springs, Warren County. He was also heavily interested in real estate in the city of Erie and in other parts of Erie County. He was president of the Citizens' National Bank of Corry and the Girard Wrench Company, and was a heavy stockholder and a director of the P., S. & L. E. R. R.
In politics Mr. Culbertson was always a staunch Republican and rendered much valuable service to the party of his choice. In 1888 he was elected to Congress on the Republican ticket.
Beginning in 1863 he resided in a beautiful country home on one of his farms, about a mile from Girard, but in 1894 he began the erection of a residence in Girard borough.
