General Notes: Husband - William Canan Phipps

---

He was reared upon the old homestead, and received his education in the common schools. He was engaged in the lumber business and employed on the home farm until the commence­ment of the war, when he enlisted in Company E, Sixteenth Pennsylvania Cavalry, and served until the close of the struggle. He participated in thirty-four engagements, and was wounded just previous to the surrender of Lee. On the close of the war he returned to Clinton township and en­gaged in the oil business for two years, and then resumed farming. He was a member of John M. Phipps Post, G. A. R., of Clintonville, of which he was commander two terms, and then quartermaster of the post. Politically he was a Republican. [HVC 1890, 982]

Per cemetery book, he died in 1891.
